Barnstaple Digital Cinema Technician

DIGITAL CINEMA TECHNICIAN - TRAINEE - PART TIME

Job Description

Scott Cinemas, Barnstaple

£9.52/hr during training, £10.34/hr upon completion*

ABOUT US
Scott Cinemas are looking to recruit a highly motivated individual to an exciting role at our cinema in Barnstaple. Barnstaple is a 4-screen cinema in the North Devon town and is the busiest cinema in the Group’s estate, attaining up to 220,000 customer admissions in any given year. There are exciting development plans for the future, with multiple opportunities for a new multiplex in the town in the coming years, or expansion of the existing venue. As Cinema bounces back from the pandemic, we find ourselves entering what has been called ‘the second golden age of Cinema’, with pent-up audience demand being evident.

THE JOB
A very rare opportunity has come up to join the team at this cinema – we very rarely have Technical vacancies, so if you’re interested in movies, cinema and A/V technology, and IT, this could be the job for you. As part of this role, the applicant will be working with the cinemas Technical Team to ensure all technical tasks within the venue are completed to high standards. This can be an opportunity for a trainee looking to learn the business, or indeed someone with a prior knowledge of cinema technology and projection.

From a Technical aspect, the cinema is served by four projection boxes on three levels. We have NEC Digital projectors with Dolby servers and Unique Rosetta Bridge TMS. Sound is in the form of Dolby 7.1 in all screens with CP750 and CP850 processors, Crown amps and JBL Pro cinema speakers. And of course, we have the full range of accessibility, alternate content and satellite provision.

In the ever-changing landscape of cinema projection, the role of the Technician is a critical one at this cinema. We have an excellent track record in presentation standards that must be upheld to suit audience demands. Typical key duties will include:

  • Preparing films, trailers, and adverts for exhibition by means of ingesting all relevant DCP and satellite content, as well as making sure KDM’s are received.
  • Preparing playlists and scheduling the cinemas films for the week.
  • Present event cinema shows and alternate content to a high standard, utilising manual presentation skills where necessary and ensuring all relevant satellite broadcast tests are completed when appropriate.
  • Maintenance of the digital projector systems to include xenon and filter changes, regular sound and picture QC and ensuring good cleanliness leads to correct operation at all times.
  • Ensuring theatre and foyer lights are all working correctly, replacing lamps and fittings where appropriate.
  • Ensuring operation of heating and air conditioning and liaising with the Senior Team to report faults.
  • Responding to emails and other communication from the Senior Team and third parties
  • Maintenance, installation, and upkeep of the cinemas EPOS equipment, including networking aspects.

Other day to day duties will be included as required by the Technical Manager. You will report directly to the Cinema Technical Manager and maintain strong links with the entire management team.

However, no two days are ever the same. Cinemas are dynamic environments, and you’ll have the chance to touch on all aspects of the business.

KEY SKILLS

  • Either a full working knowledge of – or a strong desire to learn about – cinema projection systems, including alternative content and A/V.
  • A knowledge of IT and networking would be advantageous. You must have a good working knowledge of MS Excel and Word, as well as the ability to learn and adapt to our own bespoke software packages.
  • Excellent situational awareness and the ability to adapt to very specific Health & Safety policies.
  • Good communication skills, both in-person and written.
  • Above all, a practical, hands on, “can do” attitude, with a love of film!

HOURS
This is a PART-time position of approximately 25 hours per week, though the number of hours may increase providing holiday cover.

Manager, Scott Cinemas, Boutport Street, Barnstaple, Devon, EX31 1SR

As this is a keyholder position, you should by over the age of 18, or within 4 months of your 18th birthday.

* Pay rise pending, in line with April 1st NMW increases.
